Arkansas
The kids and I went to Arkansas this past weekend. Stayed with anther adoptive family, had a bar-b-que (veggie style for us), went on a hayride, stayed up talking till 3 am and of course the kids slept for just a few hours each night. They played outside the whole time, ate outside, and came in only to use the potty or sleep. She has three kids, and of course, so do I.
There is something so comforting about spending time with another adoptive family. Our kids felt normal. This is hard because Ravi attends school with mostly white and black kids, and same with Lakshmi and Priya. This weekend, there were 4 Indian kids, several Caucasions, and a ton of Korean kids. We had SO much fun.
My kids cried when we had to leave Arkansas and come back home!
Volvo
Well, my car broke down week before last weekend. Finally got it back just an hour before I left for Arkansas. It runs much better than before. However, the rings are worn out due to the way the first guy put the car together, and now the engine will have to be replaced. I hope it lasts through the time that I take my national board exam for Massage Therapy. Then, I can either buy a new engine, or get a new car.
First Field Trip
Ravi is going on his first field trip at school. Sure he has been on many field trips, but all as a homeschooler. He is excited about it. I volunteered to go as a chaperone. It will be my first time to chaperone. I'm a little nervous, although the kids are mostly very good.

Visitors From Out-of-Town
Company:
My sister and brother in law will be staying with me this weekend while they attend the First Annual Gandhi Peace Workshop (not sure about the exact title!). Looking forward to see what they have to say while attending. They live 5 hours away from here and we only see each other about 4 or 5 times a year. My sister is one of my best friends.
Otherwise, the Pink Palace Arts and Crafts Fair will be here this weekend, and I intend to go. I go every year. They always have simple things like horses milling sugar cane to be made into sorghum. Another family GIVES away biscuits with freshly made butter and honey for anyone who wants some. My kids will stand at that booth for a half hour munching away, watching them bake more fresh biscuits. Then there is the animal area where kids can play with or pet farm animals, feed goats corn, brush ponies or ride on the little train. My kids LOVE this part, and usually end up crying when I pull them away to look at other things.
And all the samples of foods, anything you can image. All the hand made soaps to buy, hand knit hats and other knitted items to buy. You can learn how to weave, how to spin wool, and there is always a half dozen women knitting, who would be willing to show how to knit.
Last year there was the adorable young man (way to young for me!) who made and sold these musical instruments which you play with sticks that have round rubber balls on the ends. I stood there for an hour myself, enjoying the instruments, learning to play it.
I usually find some hand spun wool to buy at the craft fair, so I will be looking for that. But the fun thing is that I always find something for the kids for their stockings, which I hold until winter holidays. Last year I loved the wooden dreidel that I found for Ravi. He plays with it all the time. What ever a person can make by hand, it will be found at this arts and crafts show. I just love it.
The kids love the food, but it is usually greasy fair food, so I pass. It is supposed to rain all weekend, so I can't see spending alot of time there, but hopefully there will be some slips of sun.
Knitting:
I am enjoying some non-wool yarn for the first time ever. It is soft and velour feeling, with a rainbow of colors, so I am making myself a new scarf. I love it! I think I will get red and gold in this same style, and make a small throw for the sofa. YUMMMMM!
Massage School:
Just when you think your life is too hard, you find someone who has it harder. I have been making up my time and tests at massage school and am really close to being finished. Yesterday one of my classmates was at school (we graduated in January) and she has more hours and tests to make up that I did when I started making them up a couple of months ago. She has to finish everything by the end of this month. I felt terrible for her. She is as poor as me, but she doesn't have kids.
Otherwise about school, I took another test yesterday, and so far I am passing! (better than passing, but I am mostly concerned with passing this course and getting my license).
I hope to be done by the end of this month. I may have to do my final massage in November.

Ravi got Honor Roll
Honor Roll
It is the joy of my life to announce that Ravi got Honor Roll at school. All A's & B's on his report card! I was so pleased with him that I took him out and bought him a remote control car to reward his hard work!
It's magic!
123 Magic is a behaviour modification program...both book and video. It has had a big impact on the kids. They are behaving most of the time, even Ravi. We tried this a while back, but I didn't even have a few minutes to devote to this book to read it in full at the time, that I never got it off the ground. The video is the way to go! It was easy to start and stop, and I could put it on pause, or rewind, with very little effort, and also was able to use it before I even finished watching the video. Incredible!
Otherwise...
Other than all the above, I am progressing nicely at school, altho I am not nearly close to being an honor roll student! I made a C on my last test, which bummed me out. I am taking the attitude that my mom took when she was in school with three kids...."be glad you passed!".
Now if I can manage to pass over all on my program, I will be able to take the national boards.
At our house, Sunday night is for watching Extreme Makeover, Home Edition. I actually have an application I have printed off, and plan to send it in. While our home is not the worst, it is pretty bad. I would be so thrilled to have them come to our home and fix it! :)

The Nina, Massage School, Natural Home Magazine
The Nina
This past Sunday, I took the kids to see The Nina, which is an exact replica of Christopher Columbus' favorite ship. It was amazing, and small! They told us that 27 men plus Columbus lived on this ship. They worked, ate and lived on the deck, which was crowded with just 5 or 6 people on the ship. Some stayed up in the masts, others on the upper deck where all the ropes and sailing apparatus were hooked up. There wasn't any protection from the elements, and it is truely amazing that Columbus and his men made the trip to America, and other ports. While reading the history books tells the story, seeing the ship and the conditions the men were under really tells what they were like. Just a gusty wind or a wave could have easily washed a few men off the deck! Can't imagine how they made it here.
Now I realize that America was not truely discovered as it was inhabited already by the Native Americans, just this part of history, seeing how they traversed, it truely incredible.

Seeing the ship was wonderful, but we also spent our afternoon at the river park, where we spashed in the simulated Mississippi River at Mud Island. It was an absolutely beautiful day, and I hope we get to do that again before the days shorten.
My little toe is healing, but still smarts alot. Walking all that way on Sunday caused some stress to my toe, and I have a bit more swelling than I did originally.
Massage School
Yesterday in class, I announced that I was looking for "practice bodies" to do massage on since my final massage (for a grade) is coming up very soon. Several people in the class took down my number. Much to my relief because I have to practice quite a bit before I do my final massage. I have been out of practice since April when I finished all my massage logs required to graduate (90 of them!).
I got my test back and wasn't too pleased with my grade. I hope they let me take it again, because it will pull down my average!
Natural Home Magazine
I love reading Natural Home Magazine...all about living green, natural living, environment, recycling ect. I contacted them and asked could I write an article for them (topic withheld from here!) and they want to see it! The website says that they recieve articles 8 to 9 months before publishing, and retain the right to edit. Well, I think I will send in the article, and perhaps in a year or less, it will be published!

Broke my toe
I am really praying to Lord Ganesha today. I broke my toe this morning, and this time I got a transverse break, which means that it broke clean across. This is the same toe I broke two weeks ago. I had gotten up this morning to go to the bathroom, slid out of bed and walked across the hallway to come back to bed and accidently hit the vacuum with my right baby toe.
Damn vacuum! I don't know why I left it sitting there. I hate myself at moments like this!
I heard the bone snap, then the wave of nausea, pain and freaking out came over me like a tidal wave. This one hurt more than the last one. Took me 10 minutes to stop moaning and crying, while grabbing my foot. Finally after laying there for a few minutes, I got up, found the first aid kit and applied two layers of tape around my foot to splint my toe to my foot. Then I got the frozen crowder peas out of the freezer and put that on my foot for half an hour. It helped the initial swelling alot, but the pain is still very much there. If I walk on my heel, I can keep the pain down a bit.
Lakshmi and Priya heard me break my toe, and they were rushing to my side to see what was wrong. I think I scared them alot.
I went to school, but decided to go home. I just don't think I can manage the pain there, and still focus on work.
BTW, I took a test yesterday and I am waiting to get my grade. When I left school this morning, I asked them to call me once it was graded, because I am experiencing alot of nervousness waiting to see how I did. I hope they will call. I also hope I made an A. One question I didn't know the answer to but guessed it, and two I wasn't sure on. We will see!
All the hurricanes coming up from the Gulf of Mexico are giving us alot of wind. Nothing compared to the Gulf Coast of course! But it has been nice and breezy, which I was glad of. Yesterday, the edge of the hurricane passed over our city, and the whole sky was covered with swirling clouds. Just a bit of rain here and there, and now today is it sunny and beautiful.
I can't image what the people in coastal Alabama, Florida and Mississippi are experiencing. The images on the tv were very horrible...lots of loss of homes, some deaths and alot of people who have no electricity nor will they have some for a few weeks.
A year ago, we had a very bad storm cell come through here and due to the large amount of straight line winds, we lost electricity for 2 weeks. It was hell literally. I can't imagine going longer than that, and this is what the people from the coastal regions are facing.

Half Way There
For those who are following the massage school story:
Right now, I only have about 20 hours of make up time left. By Friday, I will have only 12 hours left. By a week from today, I will be finished with my make up hours!!! YAHOO!
I should have been finished by April when I finished all my labs, but I was so overwhelmed by my life, the kids and trying to keep food on the table, that I dropped the ball after my massages were all done.
I turned in my final modality report (Labor Massage Therapy) today and got a 94. I put so much work into the report, but my presentation was not that great. I was VERY sick the day I gave the report, including a horse voice. I sounded terrible, felt terrible, and looked terrible. I did bring lots of brochures, pictures ect, so she liked that.
Currently, I owe the school paperwork on 5 massages, 5 tests, 8 massages and $2000.00 in fees. I am praying for a miracle on the fee's. I have to pay the fee's by November 23rd, and I just don't have it. I hope there is someone special in my life (or a few someones!) who can come forward to pay the fee's, or loan me the money to pay the fee's.
When I get my massage therapy license (good in almost all the states in the US) I will be able to earn $50 to $60 an hour! I plan to work only part time, but even at that, I could bring in $2000 very quickly.
Otherwise:
Last night, I was watching the news and was very sad to see that one of our local women's shelters is in danger of being shut down. They have a utility bill of $3000. Last night, one of the local news stations was able to form a small donation hotline and they shelter now has $1500.00. And the utility company has extended their deadline to pay by three more days.
I was very happy to know this. The Vagina Monologues cast donates money to this organization every year from our show. It is just one of the organizations that we support.
Also, this is the ONLY women's shelter who will take women with boys over the age of 5 years, and girls over the age of 8 years. So naturally, they have been at their full capacity for some years now. Without money to pay the utility bill, they will not be able to light the house, nor will they be able to cook. Just breaks my heart. The name of the shelter is Ye Old Path. If you know about this place and want to help, please do!

Children's Museum
This weekend, the kids and I went to the Children's Museum to a presentation for the Indian community. Our India Association is pairing up with another organization to create an interactive space in the Children's Museum that will cover 4 countries. India is one of them. I am eager to see what will become of it. The organization is asking all the Indian families to give $500 to the project. Hmmmm.
Today, I went to lunch with the volunteers from the Kids Corner from India Fest. It was nice to have lunch with these woman in a low stress environment. Amazingly, adoption was what everyone wanted to talk about. Turns out one woman plans to adopt once they have had a biological child, while another woman doesn't have kids, and I wondered if she and her husband may want to adopt as well. She was probably THE most interested in adoption (viewing by the close attention she payed to the details of the conversation). I think I will ask her at some point if she is interested. I always love to turn more couples on to adoption. It is such a wonderful way to build a family.
Ravi is doing wonderfully in his class room. He is making mostly A's or 100's. I am very proud of him and glad he is trying so hard.
The girls are also trying hard, and have done well with their homework, even tho I think it is silly to give 4 year olds homework!
The best news of all is that my school gave me an extension to get my work finished and graduate. By a mistake, they gave me an extension until November. Fortunately, the school is going to honor that mistake, and I will have some time to study and take my final tests. I feel so happy I could fly!
Now, I will knock out all of my hours I have pending, within the next 10 days, and then take each remaining test one at a time, and hopefully I will make a good grade on each test. My goal is to make at least 90% on all my work so that I can apply for a job in a hospital when I get my license.

First Post at blogspot

Seems like an easier way to journal online.
Well, just carrying on from the previous journal. Yesterday when I picked up the girls from Pre-Kindergarten, Priya was walking funny. I could smell it and knew she had a poop in her panties! (just jumping right in here!!) lol! I asked her what happened, and she told me that she was put in time out by her teacher, and was so mad about it that she decided to poop! See, things are just never this simple. I don't know why she decided to do it, but goodness...I hope she doesn't do it again. I was slightly upset. I haven't had to clean up something like this in a VERY VERY long time. I had to borrow a diaper and put it on her. Her clothes were all dirty, and shoes too. I just carried her out in a diaper and her shirt. She was VERY mad.
Sometimes, she gets so mad she makes bad choices. I hope she learned from the plain embarrassment from having no pants or shoes, that this was a bad choice.
Today, I got a call from the hearing impaired program that they would be observing the girls to see if they would qualify as "typical language examples" in their half day program next door to the pre-k. I really hope they do qualify, as I would love for them to be in a program where they recieve special attention (there will be 2 HIP vs 2 TLE kids in the class). Four kids ONLY per one teacher. Anyway, I will find out on Tuesday if they qualified, then also find out the cost. I heard from someone that there is NO clost for TLE's. That would be fabulous. They could really benefit from this special program. My suspision is that Priya will qualify, and Lakshmi won't. Lakshmi is quieter than Priya. She can speak very well, she just doesn't always speak up unless she has something to say, or someone is asking her a question, whereas Priya will talk more frequently.
Ravi is doing GREAT in school this year. I am so happy. I just got his weekly evaluation and the teacher wrote in the comment section that "Ravi is having a great 2nd grade year!". Wow...made my heart glow!
Now about me...I have to finish massage therapy school by September 23. Goodness...that is coming fast.

My Volvo!
Yes, that was Volvo! Shame on you! It is finally ready! I did the shake down cruise yesterday, and it is working fine. Needs an alinement on the front, but otherwise is cruising just fine!
The kids were SO excited about riding in it. We haven't had airconditioning in our other car for two years, and you just can't live in the Mid-South without it. We did live, but summers have been very difficult.
The car looks great, the kids aren't fighting as much anymore, and everyone has MORE space. And best of all, I can get my massage table in the back. It's a 240 station wagon. Yeah! Me driving a station wagon...but it really is great. I can ride 3 more people besides the kids and me, and for the first time can pick visitors up from the airport, something I haven't been able to do since the Volvo broke down.

Oh, and I think I want to buy a bicycle rickshaw to carry the kids around in. With the cost of gas (it was about $25 for gas for the Volvo) I would love to save the money! b

The kids were SO excited about riding in it. We haven't had airconditioning in our other car for two years, and you just can't live in the Mid-South without it. We did live, but summers have been very difficult.
The car looks great, the kids aren't fighting as much anymore, and everyone has MORE space. And best of all, I can get my massage table in the back. It's a 240 station wagon. Yeah! Me driving a station wagon...but it really is great.
