Attachment Disorder, and Dr. Phil

Yesterday(1/13) I was online, and I saw a post to a list about a program that was about to aire on Dr. Phil show about a family who had adopted a little boy from India, and now (said the website) "ready to give him back". I watched it was overwhelmed with frustration. I felt terrible for the little boy, but also recognized some signs in him that Ravi and Priya had when they first came home. Even Priya is still having alot of problems.

This child was unable to attach, and Dr. Phil was saying that it was the families responsibility to help this child bond (which I agreed) and also that they were basically terrible parents.
Admittedly, the show did say the mom was terrible to call her child stupid, and I agree. But Dr. Phil knows about as much about attachment disorder as I know about brain surgery.

I was so angered. The show manipulated the family and child, and I could tell the whole story wasn't being told. I remembered the family on an adoption mailing list from quite some time back, so I posted to the list to offer support to the family.

It was greet to get her email, and to know that the show didn't really tell the whole story, and just what was really going on, that could cause a mother to crumble. I have been able to help her somewhat, and she is getting counseling from the show.

I know just where this mother has been. I have three children also, and basically when from 1 to 3 kids in 11 months! To make it worse, Priya, our third child was so difficult. She cried for 3 straight days after we got home. I felt so sorry for her, but wondered what I was going to do to help my child. Her orphanage director didn't respond back to my email until over 2 months had passed, making it impossible for me to know how the ayahs handled her at the orphanage.

Anyway, today, Ravi is doing great...honor roll and more ect. Priya is getting some intense parenting from me and I think it is helping. I just wish that when a family is having trouble with a child, that the professionals, relatives and neighbors didn't start pointing a finger at the mother, but instead choose to help. What a difference our world would be!
