All three of my kids went to Hindu Heritage Camp yesterday (Sunday). I had no idea what it would be like, but the minute we arrived, I realized every thing would be FINE. My kids brought a friend who's family was staying with us this weekend. These are our Baptist friends, wonderful people. I love all of them. They are an adoptive family, and have three children as well. One child is biological, one is adopted domestically and half Indian, half Caucasion, and the last one was adopted from Korea. Now, they are waiting for a little girl from Thailand.
There is no doubt that I was surprised when they said, "We would like to send our kids to the camp with your kids". They are fairly strict Christians, God loving people, good people who love their kids. You couldn't ask for better friends. I just because amazed that they would allow their children to attend the HINDU camp! Funny how things work! This is the exact opposite thing that we did in our family last week.
I asked her (before we went) how she would feel if he got confused because of the camp, and she said, "I would straighten him out, we aren't going to have him worshipping as a Hindu in our house, and when he turns 18, he can do what he wants to, if he leaves". It was a very rough moment for us, but we worked through it.
Next year, I will be helping the camp become a 1 week program, similar to VBS, but with a different name, and focus on Hindu Heritage and Arts.
Well, I am so relieved. Ravi LOVED the camp, and really didn't want to leave. It was perfect for him, and we signed up for a Hindu Family Magazine and should get it soon. It is bilingual, (Gujerati/English).
Thank you for all the emails and advice I have gotten from you all! We will make it through this!
