Today Ravi's class had a party. They exchanged cards and candy. I went to the school to be there for the party. The kids just mingled around the room, talking and such. It wasn't a REAL party, but just a relaxing time where they weren't doing work.
I talked to Ravi's teacher, and she showed me Ravi's progress report. I was shocked to see that he had A's and B's in everything but Math. He had a 64 average. She has been sick with pneumonia for 2 1/2 weeks, and sure I can understand why she wasn't in contact with me while she was in the HOSPITAL! But what about the other 4 weeks, before she was sick, and he was failing tests? I just can't understand. Not ONE word of his failing grades. I had talked with her several times. Normally she stays in great contact with me about his grades.
Now, I don't see how Ravi can be on the Honor Roll again. This would have been the 7th six week period of Honor Roll. But now it seems he will not be on it. Worst all is that I could have been getting Ravi some tutoring. She did say that most of the mistakes were because he was making silly mistakes, and not checking his work. Like 2 +1 = 4, or something like that.
That was just an example. They are WAY over basic math now, and have learned their multiplication tables, and are doing long division right now. I know some kids start having problems at this point, as long division is a leap in a different direction than basic addition.
Well, I talked to Chandra about it and he is going to get a fellow teacher to come over and tutor Ravi on the weekends, until his grades pull up.
Just to add to the problems Ravi is having, most of you remember that he was born with a congenital defect....a unilateral congenital cataract in his left eye.
He had two surgeries to correct it when he was 3 years old and I really thought we were okay. But I kept hearing that congenital defects come in 2's. Well, we never found the 2nd one, and just assumed that he didn't have any other defects. Well, turns out he has a kidney problem, where he has a prolapse or something like that, and he pee's, but can't feel it coming out until he feels the wet pee on his underwear. His skin feels it otherwise, but he doesn't feel the pee passing through his ureter. It does seem that he will need another surgery. My hopes are that he doesn't lose one of his kidneys. This kid has had it tough enough already, with his blindness at first, then overcoming that through surgery and bifocal glasses, then learning issues, and RAD. Well, he and I have had enough. More on this later when we have definitive tests results back.
Valentines with the kids:
Today the kids and I spent time writing Valentines openly and secretively and placing them in the big Valentines Card box. Tonight after dinner, we opened up the box and it was fun to recieve all the "i love you mommy" cards, and hearts, and whatever else they did. I made special cards for the kids (cut out peices to make a dragonfly on a heart for each card), I put chocolate heart shaped lollipops in the box and it was SO fun to open it. The kids LOVED the idea, and we will do it again next year. Instead, we will start writing our cards and love letters much earlier, near the first of February. The box is decorated with construction paper, red hearts and stickers. There is a slit in the top, and I can open it from the bottom.
Before dinner, we drove around and took Valentines to all the people who have done special things for us this year. It was fun to show up with a bag, drop it off and imagine how excited they would be to see it. The kids loved this ALOT. We did it last year too, and it really makes a winter holiday fun.
Happy Valentines!
