Spring Is Here....let it rain

Hi everyone,

Mother Nature is in full swing right now. Just a couple of weeks ago, we had only a few specks of green in the yard, and in the trees. Now, everything is green, and nothing is brown.

Gardening is on my mind right now, and I am thinking about two types of gardening. Even though I am getting started a little late, I think I will still start.

First, I thought I might container garden. Then I thought about how expensive it would be to buy all the pots and soil.

Then I read about lasagna gardening, where you lay a layer of newspaper down (or cardboard) and then layer over that various things; peat moss, compost, sand, grass clippings, branches, and again starting with peat moss and continueing to layer. The ground should be ready for planting in as little as two weeks. Hard to believe that laying newspaper on the ground will cause the ground below it to become soft and pliable within two weeks. But the secret is the worms. This lasagna layering is extremely hospitable for earth worms, and they break the earth and layers up into soft, crumbly dirt, which is rich and nutritious for growing vegetables and herbs.

So, I may do it if I'm not too lazy, and see what happens. Wouldn't it be exciting if I was able to provide half of my families vegetable needs via this garden this summer?

I have a big list of plants I want, but before I start listing things, let me go and lay down a layer of newspaper, and go from there.

See you in two weeks.

Hi Paati,

Thanks for leaving a comment. I think this lasagna gardening is probably the best stuff I have ever seen in my life. No work, essentially, but to first lay the paper and the soils.

There are alot of community gardens in the US. Are you in India right now? I bet you could find a community garden if you are in the city.

Good luck on your dream.
