Hosting a Katrina Victim, what should you do?

So many families around the country are now hosting or are planning to host a Katrina victim, and we all have questions.

1. How will this affect my children?

2. Will I have enough income to support our family and our Katrina family?

3. What if they steal from us? How do we know they are a nice family?

4. What if they watch tv all day long, and never get a job?

5. What if our family needs a break, and we can't get the family to leave?

Over the days I will begin to answer these question as I come up with information about them.

Today I can answer part of number 3. We can't say anyone would or wouldn't steal from us. But there is a national clearing house for Katrina victims, and we can have a criminal background check on them and our family. We want it to be a good match.

Have you made a decision to host a family?

I'm also empathising with you on the gas prices -- traditionally California and Hawaii have always paid the highest prices, but since the hurricane, that may change...

Hi Amy,

No, I haven't decided yet. I feel like if the right situation comes along, I will know. I don't want to rush into anything, and if I move in 2 months, and I have a family with me, I would feel terrible to ask them to leave. So more than likely the best situation is a short term situation.

As for the gas, I really am thinking about getting the Honda Accord, or Accord Hybrid. I have to drive the kids back and forth every day to school, then we have boy scouts, chess, and any family things we do too. The only option is a bicycle rickshaw.
